12 July 2006 Travellers warned to take care in Thailand
Holidaymakers heading to Thailand this summer should be on alert as a new survey has found it to be the most dangerous destination for Brits abroad.
The survey by Norwich Union Direct travel found that the south-east Asian nation is the place where travellers are most likely to suffer theft, food poisoning, lose belongings or be involved in a traffic accident.
South Africa was deemed the riskiest place for violent robberies and lost luggage while the Czech Republic had the highest number of pickpockets.
Travel product manager at Norwich Union Dawn McMullan, said "The purpose of our research is not to worry tourists looking forward to their summer holidays, just to make them aware of what can go wrong when they're away from home.
"Our research shows that you need to take a little extra care in certain countries and of course make sure you are adequately covered."
The holiday destination which proved to be the lowest risk for holidaymakers was Ireland followed by Belgium and the Netherlands, Germany and France.
Based on figures from 2005, the survey looked at the results of over 60,000 claims which were made to Norwich Union.
