22 August 2007 Travellers 'will sacrifice service for price'
The prevalence of budget airlines shows that British consumers are willing to forgo superior customer service in favour of lower fares, it has been claimed.
Aviation watchdog the Air Transport Users Council reports that, while every passenger is different, there is a trend for holidaymakers to be willing to give up features like in-flight meals and increased luggage allowance if it will save them money on their trip.
James Fremantle, s spokesperson for the council, said: "The whole industry is price driven now and people appear not to mind not having all the services they had before like food and baggage.
"They don't mind paying extra for those things if their flight is very cheap - that's certainly the feedback that we're getting."
He added that despite this focus on price, if prices drop to a level which impacts upon events like lost baggage and delays - which could result in costly travel insurance claims - then this sacrifice has gone too far.
In October 2006, Sainsbury's Bank reported that 12 per cent of travel insurance claims received by the firm relate to delays to travel or baggage.
