27 January 2006 Trinidad struck by floods
A series of floods in Trinidad have left many homes destroyed and numerous farmers with whole livelihoods washed away.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage is believed to have been caused by the floods, which are the second set to hit the region within two weeks.
Many rivers across the country have burst their banks, leaving roads and homes in central, east and south Trinidad immersed in water.
"Every time it rains I experience floods but this was the worst I have ever seen. The livestock was just being washed away," Shairoon Ramidal, who lost 400 ducks when the floodwaters reached her farm, told the Trinidad News.
Landslides are also reported to have occurred on the Rio Claro main road, which are thought to be threatening several homes and lives.
The Rio Claro/Mayoro Region has called upon the international community to provide assistance for the current crisis.
