17 November 2005 Tropical depression Gamma leaves two dead
Tropical depression Gamma has already claimed two lives as its impact hits the Caribbean.
Expected to reach the status of a tropical storm by Thursday, the depression has already caused damage to the islands of St Vincent, the Grenadines and Puerto Rico.
On the Grenadine island of Bequia a mudslide buried two fishermen and destroyed numerous homes. The victims' friends tried to dig them out but a second landslide caused them to flee for safety. Rivers bursting their banks have made roads impassable.
In Trinidad torrents of rain have swept away two bridges and flooding has caused 20 schools to close in the country's east, reports the San Diego Union Tribune.
If it reaches the status of a storm, Gamma would be the 24th-named storm in an already record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season during which parts of America and the Caribbean were ravaged by floods, damaging oil supplies and destroying thousands of homes.
