27 October 2005 Tropical storm Alpha leaves 15 dead
The record-breaking 22nd storm of the Atlantic's hurricane season has left at least 15 people dead in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Moving its direction north into the Atlantic, tropical storm Alpha has since weakened and been downgraded to a tropical depression, reports the BBC.
Mudslides and flooded rivers swamped streets and swept away homes, leaving a further 12 people missing.
According to the civil protection agency chief the death toll is expected to rise.
Already battered from recent storms, the two countries' shared island of Hispaniola suffered again.
Two fisherman were reported to have been found dead after their boat capsized in the rough seas that preceded the storms.
Damage caused by Alpha has added to an already-wrecked region.
Work to clear up the popular tourist destinations of Florida and Cuba is underway after Hurricane Wilma tore its way through the Caribbean and the southern half of Florida, killing at least 17 people.
In Florida roughly three million homes and businesses have been left without electricity, and work to repair the damage caused by flooding in Cuba is being carried out in several villages.
