29 October 2007 Tunisian location predicted to be next hotspot
The Isle of Jerba in Tunisia is set to become the next travel hotspot with holidaymakers, a new study of traveller trends suggests.
Based on a range of criteria, such as search activities and travel postings, the TravelCast list of emerging international travel hotspots placed Jerba in first place, followed by Makandi Bay in Egypt at number two and Phangnga, Thailand, in third place.
Conducted by travel community TripAdvisor, the survey of more than 2,500 travellers around the world found that almost two thirds (64 per cent) preferred to head for the beach above anywhere else.
The palm tree-covered island of Jerba, or Djerba, is located in the south east of Tunisia on the Gulf of Gabes, off the coast of north Africa, and is dotted with pretty towns and villages of whitewashed houses.
Surrounded by beaches of fine sand and equipped with stylish hotels and resorts, Jerba is welcoming and has something for every visitor, from its Roman sites and pretty gardens to watersports schools and the locations for some of the exterior scenes in the original Star Wars film.
Other locations listed in the Top Ten World Destinations for 2008 included Kovalam, India, Sabaudia in Italy, Morocco's Asilah, Ko Phangan, Thailand, La Plagne in France, Yangshuo, China, and Kotor in Montenegro.
