29 June 2005 Turin suffers in the heat
A heat wave and water shortage is causing severe problems in northern Italy.
The city of Turin, a popular travel destination for British tourists, has been gripped by sweltering temperatures that have soared towards the 40 degrees Celsius mark.
The local government has said that casualties suffering from heat-related incidents are likely to be twice as prolific as is normally expected for this time of year.
Italian media claims that at least five elderly people have lost their lives due to the heat, and the government is urging older generations to stay in the shade as a precaution.
Meanwhile, the agriculture industry of northern Italy is suffering due to lack of water.
Water levels are so low that there is only enough irrigation for the next two weeks, according to Coldiretti, the farmers' federation.
A federation statement said: "The river Po is at historic lows and current levels won't supply water for irrigation for much longer."
