10 March 2008 Turkey tourism set to grow?
The Turkish tourism industry is expecting visitor numbers to increase during 2008, according to reports.
Reuters claims tourism officials and industry organizations in the emerging destination predict an increase of between 12 and 15 per cent in foreign visitors this year.
Murat Dedeman, head of the Tourism Investors Association, commented that Turkey is expected to have a "good season".
He told Reuters: "People are talking about a recession but this does not have too much effect on tourism."
According to Mr Dedeman, people view holidays as a necessity. In times of economic strain they will still take holidays in traditional and emerging destinations, even though they may spend fewer days abroad than they would have otherwise.
The Turkish Statistical Institute last year noted that in the 12 months leading up to September 2007, the country saw foreign visitor numbers increase by some 23.5 per cent.
Leisure tourism saw growth on 15 per cent in the same period, suggesting more people are opting for Turkish holidays.
