27 September 2005 Typhoon Damrey claims two lives
China's resort island of Hainan has been hit by Typhoon Damrey, with two people being killed and extensive damage being caused to houses and crops.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the typhoon was the worst seen in the region since September 1973, with wind speeds reaching 125 mph.
Reuters reported that 170,000 people in the area had been evacuated, while some 5,000 were stranded at Haikou airport, unable to go anywhere due to the cancellation of a series of flights.
In the resort of Yalong Bay, hotels were either empty, or tourists had managed to blockade themselves in their rooms.
The two fatalities occurred in Wanning, on the coast of Hainan, and they join the 18 people who were killed in the Philippines, when Damrey was still classified as a tropical storm.
The typhoon is expected to affect the coast of Vietnam as well, and more than 100,000 people have been evacuated in anticipation.
