16 September 2006 UK airports to soften restrictions
The government is set to ease security regulations at British airports, it has announced, which may be of relief to holidaymakers heading abroad in the near future.
Since a number of security incidents in recent weeks, there has been a limit on the size and content of hand luggage, with liquids being banned.
These restrictions had been kept under review and that an announcement of new regulations would be made next week, a government spokesman said.
A British Airport Authority spokesman commented: "We welcome any move by the Department for Transport which they feel is appropriate and has the added benefit of making passengers' journeys easier."
Musicians have recently been at the forefront of complaints regarding the current restrictions on hand luggage.
The Musicians Union expressed concern that expensive instruments which were no longer allowed to be taken aboard as hand luggage would be damaged if put in the hold.
