13 March 2008 UK is still traditional destination for holidays
Britons may increasingly choose to spend their holidays in the traditional destination of the UK, it has been asserted.
According to the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (Alva), the traditional destination often associated with seaside resorts such as Blackpool and Devon could gain popularity as Brits seek to avoid airports and they begin to feel the "economic pinch".
Another driving factor is named as the weakening pound against the euro.
"We have the greatest quantity of high quality attractions of any country in the world, but because they're on our doorstep we tend to take them for granted. We've got Liverpool European Capital of Culture so people might decide to stay and have a look at that," Alva director Robin Broke said.
Last year, Alva reports that 5.5 million people visited Blackpool Pleasure Beach while the Natural History Museum was visited by 3,600,119 people.
Alva offers holidaymakers information on leading attractions in the UK.
