12 November 2007 UK tourists 'support' environmentally-friendly hotels
The hotel sector is underestimating holidaymakers' desires to stay in accommodation which has an environmentally-friendly ethos, it has emerged.
In a study carried out by Taylor Nelson Sofres, over 40 per cent of tourists from Britain and the United States claim that they would pick a 'green' hotel when selecting somewhere to stay while abroad, reports Travel Weekly.
Meanwhile, 45 per cent of Italian holidaymakers are also looking towards such accommodation.
However, at the Deloitte Hotel Investment Conference only two per cent of representatives from the hotel industry claimed that travellers are likely to change their holiday plans in an attempt to reduce their impact upon the environment.
Roeland Vos, president for Starwood Hotels, said: "It is a wake-up call for us that customers are making changes to their travel habits.
"The challenge is that it is not one big change, but many small ones."
Earlier this month, Virgin Atlantic announced it is to give its air passengers the chance to offset their carbon emission during the middle of their flight.
