21 September 2007 UK travel spending 'set to soar'
The amount of money Britons spend on their holidays looks likely to jump to £28.4 billion by 2012, it has been claimed.
Travel Weekly reports figures from research consultants Market and Business Development which reveal that year-on-year, for the next five years, UK holiday spending will increase by 15 per cent to reach the £28.4 billion mark.
Furthermore, the research suggests that package holiday spending will increase by three per cent in this period as travellers increasingly opt for "DIY" holidays.
However, according to the study, the growth will be slower than the rate seen during the 2003-2007 period for several reasons.
These factors which could result in Brits avoiding travel include rising oil prices, air-travel taxation and the Olympic Games.
A recent report from the Civil Aviation Authority showed that more passengers flew from UK airports in 2006 than in 2005.
Also, Dublin was revealed to be the top destination for travellers flying out of a London airport.
