06 February 2008 UK travellers keep passport on bedside table
Concerns have been raised about the security standards of some holidaying Britons in terms of how they look after their passports and valuables.
Nationwide reports that a significant number of UK holidaymakers are failing to secure their passports, valuables and cash in a safety deposit box, instead opting to keep their expensive possessions on themselves and in various locations in their accommodation.
Research by the company reveals that 36 per cent of travellers keep their valuables on their person while abroad, while 12 per cent store their goods in a suitcase.
A further nine per cent keep their possessions in a drawer while two per cent prefer to keep their cash and passports on the bedside table.
Nationwide's insurance director, Robin Bailey, remarked: "It is astounding that people are prepared to take such a gamble when travelling abroad. You never know what's around the corner and for that reason it is vital that you have adequate travel insurance in place."
