11 March 2008 UK travellers 'still favour traditional destination holidays abroad'
Traditional holiday destinations abroad are still a popular choice among British travellers, it has been suggested.
Foreign jaunts are a regular occurrence among UK holidaymakers, with only German travellers taking more trips abroad, according to the director of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions.
Robin Brooke added that the industry arranging package tours to traditional destination holiday hotspots is "very well developed", meaning travellers are able to take advantage of such deals.
In addition, low-cost airlines offer attractive flights to people wishing to travel to both traditional and emerging destinations.
Mr Brooke added: "Those two things make it very tempting for people to go abroad."
According to official government statistics, UK residents made 17.5 million visits to traditional and emerging destinations abroad.
Overall, visits to traditional and emerging destinations in Europe remained the same compared to previous periods, while fewer holidaymakers opted for North America.
Outside these areas, visits to traditional and emerging destinations increased by seven per cent.
Last year, moneysupermarket.com suggested 4.8 million Britons were to head to either Europe or the USA as their Easter holiday destination.
