14 June 2007 UK workers 'to get more holidays'
The government has published plans to give millions of employees in the UK up to eight extra days of annual leave.
A staggered increase has been announced by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), with the increase in minimum annual holiday entitlement from 20 days to 24 this October and up to 28 days in April 2009.
It is predicted that up to six million British workers could benefit from this change in legislation, including part-time workers who will receive a pro-rata increase in holiday entitlement.
Jim Fitzpatrick, employment relations minister at the DTI, said: "This extra time off will make a real difference in the lives of hard-working people - a proper rest from work and more time to spend with their families and friends."
He added that, as a consequence, industry will also benefit from a more productive workforce that is absent less often.
Last winter, More Than reported that 22 per cent Britons are "too busy" to use their annual leave for a "proper break" from work.
