05 March 2007 US to see record number of tourists in 2007
The US state department has reported that the country will see a record number of visitors this year, marking the completion of the recovery of the industry following the incidents of September 2001.
Following the attacks on the World Trade Centre and other targets, tourist numbers dropped 17 per cent from a high of 51.2 million, but have since recovered, with 51.1 million tourists from across the globe visiting the country last year.
Carlos M Gutierrez, US commerce secretary, said: "International travel to the US continues to show growth over growth as it reaches near record highs in the number of international visitors to our country."
The state department added that it had engaged in streamlining the process for visa applications and added a number of consular positions in order to speed up the time those wishing to enter must wait for appropriate documentation.
Last month, the chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts told a senate hearing that the government had successfully reduced the time those seeking visas had to wait for appointments and urged greater publicity of this achievement.
