24 December 2007 US visitor increase
The United States has reported a 13 per cent increase in visitors travelling to the country in September 2007, compared with the same month last year.
According to figures from the US department of commerce, a total of 4.1 million visitors travelled to the US over the month, while the third quarter of 2007 was the strongest of the year, with figures up by 12 per cent.
The international visitation data indicates that total visitation for the first nine months of 2007 rose by ten per cent against the same period of 2006.
Spending by international visitors during September 2007 increased by one fifth (19 per cent) to $10.8 billion (£5.46 billion) from September 2006 and spending over the year-to-date reached $89 billion, 12 per cent higher than the first nine months of 2006.
Overseas arrivals for September 2007 rose by 11 per cent, Canadian visitation by 18 per cent and arrivals from Mexico by 11 per cent. Visitation from western Europe grew by 12 per cent during the month and arrivals from the UK were up by six per cent in both September and year-to-date.
The federal government data also reveals that visitation from Asia increased by almost seven per cent in September this year, up four per cent year-to-date, while arrivals from South America were up 26 per cent over the month and 11 per cent over the year.
Traffic from Oceania also rose by ten per cent in September 2007, Middle Eastern arrivals were up nine per cent and African visitation rose by five per cent.
