20 November 2007 Unfit skiers 'waste holidays'
Skiers are being advised to work on their health and fitness before jetting off on snow sports holidays this winter.
Halifax warns that 38 per cent of skiers and snowboarders were physically unprepared for last year's winter holidays - causing one in ten to suffer an injury in the process/
Meanwhile, 19 per cent claimed to feel "lucky" to avoid injury after experience a fitness-related incident on the slopes.
"Everyone planning to go skiing or snowboarding this winter should ready his or her muscles in preparation. Winter sports use muscle groups that are very specific to the sport," commented Tim Carter, snow sports manager at the SnowDome.
Similarly, Paul Birkhead, senior manager of pricing and underwriting for Halifax Travel Insurance noted that "prevention is better than the cure" and recommended spending a few months in training before going on a ski holiday.
According to esure, three million Britons are likely to take a skiing holiday this winter.
