21 May 2007  Vaccine firm launches travel information site
Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis, has announced the launch of a travel information website to inform holidaymakers of infectious diseases they could potentially contract abroad and the range of immunisation options available.

The firm reports that at present, less than ten per cent of travellers take the time to investigate the health risks they may encounter when abroad, noting that 40 per cent of travellers contract health problems as a result of their travel, most experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms.

"Depending on the destination, duration and purpose of the trip, the risks of infection will vary," Sanofi Pasteur states.

"For example, 30 to 60 per cent of travellers to developing countries develop travellers' diarrhoea, by far the most common disease experienced by travellers to such countries."

It adds that at present over 800 million people travel across the globe every year, with this figure predicted to rise to 1.6 billion by 2020.

Following the success of a number of television programmes set in exotic locations, in February 2004, Churchill advised travellers to jungle destinations to ensure they get medical advice and take all necessary vaccinations before they head abroad.
