10 January 2008 Valentines couples head "off the beaten track"
Bookings for holidays over the Valentine's Day period are increasing year-on-year, it has been reported.
According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), while the ever-romantic cities of Paris, Rome and Venice still hold much sway with star-crossed lovers, "people want to do something a little bit different" as well.
Destinations like Marrakech and Reykjavik are becoming popular among those looking to stray "off the beaten track".
"Reykjavik is more of a becoming destination. Marrakech is also doing quite well. [People] are so well travelled at this point; they have done a lot of the major cities and now they want something a bit different," a spokesperson for AITO observed.
In February 2006, a survey by YouGov revealed that Paris was the most popular Valentine's Day holiday spot for Brits closely followed by Barcelona and Venice.
AITO is comprised of over 150 independent tour operators.
