07 November 2007  Virgin announces new sport equipment regulations
Virgin Atlantic has announced new luggage regulations for tourists looking to take sporting equipment abroad with them, it has emerged.

Under the move, the airline will allow travellers to take one piece of athletic equipment with them, on top of their checked baggage allowance.

Apparatus must weigh less than 32kg - unless prior consent is gained - and must not exceed the overall dimensions of 62 inches.

However should equipment weigh more than 32kg, the item will be treated as two pieces of checked baggage, which in turn will see excess charges apply.

Meanwhile, items above 45kg will need to be transported as cargo.

As a result, tourists will be able to check items such as surfboards, skis, hanggliders and canoes as long they do not exceed the dimensions.

The news comes as British Airways announced the banning of surfboards and other sporting equipment from the cargo hold of its flights from November 6th.

Paul Dickinson, sales and marketing director for Virgin Atlantic, said: "Our new sports equipment policy enables all sports travellers, whether Olympic teams or not, to enjoy their journey throughout."

Such news may be particularly welcomed by ski tourists, as earlier this week it was announced visitors to selected resorts in France will be able to get a day pass at other ranges for just ten euros (£6.96).
