09 May 2007 Visits abroad from UK residents up 3%
Increasing numbers of Britons have headed abroad in the past year, as newly released figures from National Statistics show a three per cent rise in visits overseas by UK residents.
For the 12 months ending March 2007, 68.6 million Britons headed overseas, up from 66.7 million during the previous year.
The destinations of these travellers varied, with a two per cent rise in visitors to Europe, a three per cent drop in tourists heading to North America and a nine per cent rise for those travelling to other locations worldwide.
"During January to March 2007, the number of visits overseas by UK residents remained broadly the same at 17 million when compared with the previous three months," the government department reported.
It added that the associated spending of these travellers also remained static at a sum of £8.1 billion.
Last year, Sainsbury's Bank claimed that 12 per cent of the British population was considering travelling abroad over the Christmas holidays.
