14 September 2007 Visits abroad from UK up one per cent
The number of visits overseas by UK residents has risen over the past year, it has been reported, with the biggest rise seen in travel outside of Europe and North America.
Figures from the government's Office of National Statistics (ONS) department show a one per cent rise over the full year ending July 2007, with a total of 69.3 million visits abroad over this period.
Visits to Europe remained more or less static at 54.5 million, with visits to the US and Canada rising by three per cent to 4.8 million and to other parts of the world by nine per cent to ten million.
"During May to July 2007, the number of visits overseas by UK residents decreased by four per cent to 16.8 million when compared with the previous three months," the ONS reports.
During this time, associated spending for these trips also fell by four per cent, down to £8.8 billion.
The ONS derives its figures from a random sample of passengers leaving the UK at major seaports, airports and the Channel Tunnel.
