18 October 2007 Volcanoes are "beautiful attractions"
Tourists could soon be travelling to the Philippines to enjoy the food, weather, culture and burning hot liquid magma, it has been revealed.
According to Inquirer.net, environment officials from the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources wish to turn volcanic areas into so-called eco-tourism regions, noting that tourists are drawn to volcanoes' natural features, flora and fauna and also climbing.
Meanwhile Francois Dominique de Larouziere, scientific director of Vulcania, told the AFP that volcanic eruptions were the cause of "fascination" among people.
"We have to appreciate the fact that our country has many volcanoes. They are beautiful attractions," Perla de los Reyes of the Philippines volcanology and seismology institute told the AFP.
According to de los Reyes, in 2006, tourists headed in their droves to see the Mayon volcano erupt outside of Manila.
