06 February 2008 Wasps delay Australia flights
A series of flights scheduled to take off from Brisbane in Australia that were delayed in 2006 were the result of infestations of wasps, it has been revealed.
In total five Qantas flights in total were affected in the first three months of 2006 with two flights delayed and three forced to abort takeoff entirely.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) noted that up to 30 wasps' nests were removed from Brisbane Airport after wasps built nests inside A330 planes stood on the runway.
"Wasp-related debris" was discovered in the pitot system after problems with air-speed indicators were noted by pilots as the planes taxied down the runway at the airport.
Landing gear on planes was also affected by the infestations after a rise in temperatures caused tyres to deflate.
No passengers were injured on the flights despite smoke issuing from some of the planes.
