15 January 2008 Waterfall art for NY
A new art project aimed at integrating four manmade waterfalls into New York City's waterfront is currently underway.
Building will start in July 2008 and will continue for three months as the 90 to 120 feet high waterfalls are developed, the New York Times reports.
According to the publication the project, which is a collaboration between the city of New York and the not-for-profit Public Art Fund, is expected to cost $15 million (£7.5 million).
Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson will create the works, which are designed to be environmentally friendly.
"Throughout history we have always taken water for granted. Now people can engage in the physical nature of something as epic as a waterfall," Mr Eliasson told the newspaper.
The Public Art Fund claims to be New York's leading forum for presenting artists' projects, new commissions, exhibitions and installations in the city's public spaces.
