25 October 2006 Winter holidaymakers get travel insurance warning
Britons heading abroad this winter have received a warning regarding the unregulated sale of travel protection by travel agents as part of a holiday package.
The advice, from AA Travel, comes as the company reports that six out of ten travellers book their insurance as part of their package holiday from a travel agent.
Clare Emsley, head of the company, said: "Customers often simply tick a box without properly understanding what they are paying for, because important terms and conditions are not drawn to their attention."
She warned that while the insurance industry was regulated by the Financial Services Authority, insurance bought through travel agents was not subject to these regulations, with holidaymakers having no recourse to the ombudsman in the event of problems.
In July, independent adviser Which? reported that insurance bought from travel agents tended to be more expensive, with some agents not following basic procedures when selling policies to customers.
