11 November 2006 Young travellers 'taking risks' with travel cover
Younger travellers are risking their health and safety by not paying due care and attention when taking trips abroad, with some neglecting to purchase cover in their attempt to cut costs.
Experiential travel specialist i-to-i reports that 60 per cent of young travellers visiting new or unusual holiday destinations do not increase the amount of care they take on their trip accordingly.
Its survey also found that 51 per cent of young travellers go abroad without insuring their trip.
Deidre Bounds, founder of i-to-i, said: "Travel insurance is absolutely paramount when planning your trip abroad, which makes it even more shocking that more and more youngsters are cutting it out in a bid to save cash."
She added that the importance of cover for lost possessions was outweighed by the "crucial" cover for potentially costly medical expenses, which can cost over £100,000.
Earlier this year, Sainsbury's Bank reported that 24 per cent of 16-24 year olds had gone abroad in the past 12 months without protecting their travels.
