27 November 2007 Zimbabwe is "safe" for tourists
The African nation of Zimbabwe is a safe destination for tourists, it has been claimed.
Japanese Association of Travel Agents chairman Dr Toru Furusawu made the comment as he encouraged the region to target the 17 million annual Japanese overseas tourists, the Herald reports.
Dr Furusawu added that Victoria Falls is a key tourist attraction in Zimbabwe.
"Zimbabwe is a safe tourist destination although the media depict it as an unsafe country. The hotels are beautiful and it's not as portrayed by the media," Dr Furusawu said.
According to the Herald, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority marketing and communications director Givemore Chidzidzi revealed that tourist arrivals from Japan have risen by 20 per cent since 2005.
Dr Furusawu concluded that the upcoming 2012 World Cup to be held in South Africa is an opportunity to be seized upon and could "transform" the region.
Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in Africa bordering South Africa and Botswana to the south, Zambia to the north-west and Mozambique to the east.
