British travellers needing insurance this World Cup summer
The foreign office estimates over 100,000 hopeful British fans will visit Germany this summer for World Cup 2006. And many thousands of motoring fans will flock to the Le Mans 24-hour race in France later in June. After all the excitement, and the clamour for tickets, many people will overlook the need for travel insurance, and a valid European health card.
Plenty of good advice is being put out for all involved, to help people enjoy their visits, and cover themselves in case of any mishaps. Towards the top of the list is: get some decent travel insurance for everything you intend to do. Graham Linney, Insurance Manager at Travel Insurance Web: "With relatively short trips abroad, and all the planning that goes into arranging them, it's easy to forget travel insurance - people see trips to Germany and France as low risk, and some even think an E111 will cover them - the E111 has been replaced, they will need an EHIC which is easy to get online."
A valid EHIC - European Health Insurance Card - allows you to receive the same treatment in German or French hospitals as locals would. Normally a requirement of UK travel insurance, the card becomes invaluable if you need emergency treatment, but is not a replacement for full travel cover. With a comprehensive plan, you are also protected against losing cash or travel documents- and big events like the World Cup do attract pick-pockets and bag-snatchers."
Travel insurance in Europe is inexpensive, without the high medical costs seen in the USA for example, and the proportionally lower repatriation costs. Graham Linney: "There is no reason to go without insurance, people can get cover from Wednesday to Monday at Le Mans for only £5.25, which is an excellent rate. We hope every fan has a great summer, and please remember most UK travel insurance policies exclude claims resulting from alcohol abuse."
