Superjumbo arrives to meet growing travel market
The Airbus A380 "Super Jumbo" that landed at Heathrow airport barely two weeks ago marked the start of a new era of larger capacity flights in a growing travel market. Global travel is increasing, fuelled by low-cost carriers and the emergence of Asian tourism. This new aircraft was commissioned to meet the greater demand for flights to and from the major destinations- a general growth that has been reflected in travel insurance take-up in 2006.
The A380 will seat up to 555 passengers, when it goes into service in December 2006. Manufacturers, Airbus view this new giant as a key player in the aviation world, responding to the need for a bigger plane to cater for more and more passengers flying between the world's major cities. Within the travel industry, large numbers of long and short haul flights have been mirrored by supporting services, such as Travel Insurance. Both Airbus, with 159 firm orders for their plane, and Boeing, who are banking on a medium sized aircraft to serve more airports, will cater to the growing numbers of air travellers.
